January's Free Professional Development

January is a time of renewal and resolutions. Whether our goals are professional or personal, the beginning of the year is a perfect time to consider what we've done in the past and think about what we might do better in the future. If one of your new year's resolutions was to continue learning about teaching and education, here are some of this month's free virtual PD opportunities to help you get started!

Education Week is offering a webinar entitled, "The Language of Math: The Common Core and English-Learners" on Friday, January 16 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET. It sounds like an interesting (and timely) topic; I only wish that the session was at a time when my student teachers could attend.

The Association for Middle Level Educators has two upcoming webinars. The one that I'm most intrigued by is "The Young Adolescent Brain and the Impact on Teaching and Learning," which is on Wednesday, January 28 at 4:00 pm ET.

ASCD has two webinars that are free for anyone interested. The first is "Grading Smarter, Not Harder" on January 26 at 3:00 pm ET. The second one, which is very meta, is "Using PD Online Courses for Schoolwide PD" on January 28 at 3:00 pm ET.

edWeb.net's calendar has 24 webinars left for January. These range from the ethics gap young people have online to using Pinterest to become a better teacher.

As always, there is a plethora of Twitter chats offered this month. This Google site has a very helpful listing.

Edited to Add: The Library of Congress and Teaching Tolerance has a free webinar series on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The first of these webinars is on January 22 at 4:00 pm ET. For more information, you can see the press release from the Library of Congress or register here.
